KNU Central Command orders all seven brigades to fire on cross-border military council troops

Yangon, December 20

According to a KNU source, the KNU Central Command has ordered the firing of artillery units crossing the border into areas of the 7th Brigade of the Karen National Union (KNU).

A source in the KNU's 5th Brigade told The Irrawaddy:

The KNU and KNLA top leaders recently held a meeting to discuss issues and issues to be discussed at the next congress. A local source, Salween Press, quoted a KNLA official who attended the meeting as saying that the issue of non-combat was also discussed.

"Fighting has been planned at a standing committee meeting and will be discussed in Congress," a KNLA brigade leader told Salween Press on condition of anonymity.

A source in Rangoon told The Irrawaddy that the clashes that began on December 15 were not ordered by the KNLA, but by clashes between KNLA hideouts and the Terrorist Council.

Nearly 100 militants were killed in five days of fighting in Lay Kay Kaw, according to NUG and local sources.
